In May of 2009, several folks from OIT called together a group of web/application developers who were interested in the mobile development space. This meeting was designed to generate some interest among the developers and also see what, if any development had been attempted across campus focused on mobile deployment.

In August 2009 the second meeting of the interest group was held. The group decided that in order to have a better footing to secure funding, and as a proof-of-concept, they would develop a mobile web site that was optimized for various devices and included features such as:

• RSS News Aggregator
• Directory Look-Up Tool
• Links to campus e-mail systems
• Links to official NC State Youtube channel

Less than a month later, and in conjunction with the first NC State home football game, http://m.ncsu.edu was launched and made live. The very next month, October 2009, the Libraries launched v 1.0 of their mobile website (http://m.lib.ncsu.edu) that shared the same design cues as the primary mobile website.
